I aim to ship software with as few bugs as possible, but, regrettably, on January 20 a notable bug shipped in the app. About 8:00am of January 21, on a test device, I noticed a bug that would present itself when the Mac was coming out of the lock screen, and it could have led to stats being incorrectly counted.
The update that this impacted, version 7.12, was in the early stages of a “phased roll out” that had pushed to ~2% of users. But there were other users who proactively grabbed it from the app store page (which is usually a good thing(!)), who were also affected.
In response to this revelation I immediately began work to fix it: creating a fixed version and submitting it for review; I then pulled the app out of the store. The new version of the app contained code that would show an announcement window to impacted users, notifying them of the situation. On the morning of January 22, the new version was approved, and it was immediately pushed to all users (something I typically refrain from doing (I prefer a “phased rollout”)) who have automatic updates enabled.
I aim to be as transparent as possible when it comes to any performance issues, especially relating to stats, and wanted you to know, so you could treat stats collected during the affected time appropriately.
Thank you for your understanding. January 21 was, by far, the toughest day I have ever had as a developer, and I will strive to do better moving forward. Please contact me with any concerns, or obviously you may leave a negative review.
Sincerely, Spencer
